  • Ex-Great Britain star Bobbie Goulding, 49, suing the Rugby Football League after he’s diagnosed with dementia

Great Britain half-back Bobbie Goulding is among a group of former rugby league players who are bringing legal action against the Rugby Football League (RFL) for allegedly failing to protect them from the risks of brain damage caused by concussion. He says that he played within days of “a serious knockout” on at least three occasions.

Goulding, 49, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with early onset dementia and probable CTE.

There are also 175 former rugby union players, including World Cup-winning hooker Steve Thompson, involved in a similar lawsuit.  who are also represented by Rylands Legal.

In a statement to Reuters, the Rugby Football League (RFL) said: “Rugby League is a contact sport and while there is an element of risk to playing any sport, player welfare is always of paramount importance.

“As a result of scientific knowledge, the sport of Rugby League continues to improve and develop its approach to concussion, head injury assessment, education, management and prevention across the whole game.”

  • Personal Injury Reforms 2021

    Personal Injury Reforms 2021

The government has made changes to the claims process for low value road traffic accident (RTA) related personal injury claims, commonly referred to as ‘whiplash claims’, effective from 31 May 2021 onwards. The reforms apply to low value injury claims arising from an RTA including whiplash. These changes mean that if you have suffered a whiplash injury you will have the opportunity to settle these small claims online without the need to go to court or for legal representation.

However, where you have suffered a serious non-whiplash injury because of an RTA, had an accident at work, an accident by tripping or slipping, suffered injuries because of a criminal act or been a victim of clinical negligence then you would benefit from expert legal representation.

  • COVID-19 vaccine: UK government gives Pfizer legal indemnity to protect it from being sued

The Independent newspaper has today reported that “the UK government has granted pharmaceutical giant Pfizer a legal indemnity protecting it from being sued, enabling its coronavirus vaccine to be rolled out across the country as early as next week.

The Department of Health and Social Care has confirmed the company has been given an indemnity protecting it from legal action as a result of any problems with the vaccine.

Ministers have also changed the law in recent weeks to give new protections to companies such as Pfizer, giving them immunity from being sued by patients in the event of any complications.

NHS staff providing the vaccine, as well as manufacturers of the drug, are also protected.”

  • Dementia in Football: Taskforce to be created by PFA to examine issue of brain injury diseases

A legal action over brain injuries allegedly caused in football and other contact sports has begun. Lawyers say they are working on behalf of a group of former players to establish in the courts whether sports governing bodies have done enough to protect them, and seek compensation if this is proven not to be the case.

The increased risk of neurodegenerative disease among former footballers, established in last year’s FIELD study, has been brought back into the spotlight following confirmation of Sir Bobby Charlton’s dementia diagnosis and the death of his former Manchester United and England team-mate Nobby Stiles last month, who was also suffering with the disease.

Former England and West Brom striker Jeff Astle died in 2002 aged 59 because of repeated trauma from heading footballs, described by a coroner as an “industrial injury”.

  • Cosmetic Surgery Practitioners breaching lockdown rules to visit clients’ homes

Since the government introduced the lockdown there have been reports of cosmetic surgery practitioners have been breaching lockdown rules in order to visit their clients’ homes to give them dermal fillers and Botox injections.

There are currently no rules in the UK about who can carry out the injections or what training they should have.

Experts have warned that unqualified beauticians would be unable to cope if a complication, such as an infection, arose from unsupervised home procedure.

There has been a huge rise in people, mainly twenty-somethings, having cosmetic surgery. The increase has been attributed to people wanting the perfect selfie for their social media profiles and people wanting to emulate celebrities. One example is Kylie Jenner of the Kardashian clan who has over 190 million followers on Instagram. She initially insisted that her large pout was all down to good make-up, however, she then admitted to having had lip fillers.

Our Medical Negligence Department has successfully helped clients who have suffered from negligent cosmetic surgery and have successfully secured thousands of pounds for them.

  • Legal action taken against Celtic Football Club regarding sexual abuse allegations

Formal legal action has begun against Celtic Football Club regarding claims it failed to protect victims from sex abusers working around Celtic Boys’ Club.

Celtic declined to answer questions put forward by the Guardian in relation to the legal action but instead referred to a statement made by the club in February, where it said: “Celtic Football Club is appalled by any form of historic abuse and has great sympathy for those who suffered abuse and for their families. “The club is very sorry that these events took place. The abuse of young people is an abhorrent crime.”

The statement also said: “With regard to the allegations regarding historic abuse at Celtic Boys’ Club (which, so far as we have been made aware, relate to the period prior to 1997), although Celtic Football Club is a separate organisation, we take these extremely seriously because of the historic contacts between the two organisations.”

Historic sexual abuse cases often involve abuse over a number of years within a family, at a school, in residential care homes or the church.

  • Proposed changes to the law that limit the ability to recover compensation following injury in a road traffic accident

The Ministry of Justice has decided to exclude vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians from proposed changes to the law that will limit the ability to recover compensation following injury in a road traffic accident.

Campaigners, including British Cycling, argued that it would become almost impossible for cyclists to get legal representation without sacrificing a significant proportion of the compensation that they would be entitled to.

The government has introduced the Civil Liability Act in an attempt to restrict “whiplash” claims. However, the proposal to increase the small claims limit for personal injury claims from £1,000 to £5,000 also threatened access to justice for injured road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.

We have helped a number of clients who have who have suffered an injury as a result of an accident which was not their fault and have successfully secured thousands of pounds for them.

  • Victoria Beckham’s fashion brand sued by former employee…

Victoria Beckham‘s fashion brand is being sued by a former employee who claims she developed carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of working for the company.

The NHS describes carpal tunnel syndrome as “pressure on a nerve in your wrist” that causes tingling, numbness and pain in your hand and fingers.

Kristina Kubilene alleges that she worked up to 15 hours a day for seven days in the lead-up to New York Fashion Week. The pattern cutter claims that sustaining the  “repetitive” and “awkward” movements that were required for her role has left her with a severe injury that means she is now unable to work.
