The Crime Survey for England and Wales showed that 1.6 million women and 757,000 men had experienced domestic abuse between March 2019 and March 2020, with a 7% growth in police recorded domestic abuse crimes.
Although there is limited official data so far on the impact of lockdown on domestic abuse, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) report that in mid-May 2020, there was a 12% increase in the number of domestic abuse cases referred to victim support. Between April and June 2020, there was a 65% increase in calls to the National Domestic Abuse Helpline, when compared to the first three months of that year.

In 2001 I joined (what is now called) “Resolution” a community of family justice professionals who work with families and individuals to resolve issues in a constructive way.
In January 2003 I became an accredited specialist and remained so until I left the law temporarily to live and work abroad (New Delhi, India and Istanbul, Turkey).
Pleased to say that, after getting back up to speed in family law, I have become accredited again having demonstrated my advocacy skills in dealing with financial cases and complex lower income financial cases.

Prince Harry has accepted an apology and “substantial damages” from the publisher of The Mail On Sunday and MailOnline website following claims that Harry had “not been in touch” with the Marines since his last appearance as an honorary Marine in March 2020 and that military leaders were considering replacing him as Captain-General of the Royal Marines.
The Mail On Sunday printed an apology in December 2020 and made a donation to the prince’s charity, the Invictus Games Foundation, after accepting Harry had in fact contacted the Royal Marines.
Papers filed in the High Court stated that harry had been “personally affronted “by the articles; Harry had served in the British Army for 10 years, including in Afghanistan.

Premier League champions Liverpool won a High Court case earlier this year against betting firm Winlink Marketing after one of their senior executives introduced officials to contacts at BetVictor in 2013. This led the way for a £15m sponsorship deal with BetVictor with Winlink Marketing Limited having claimed they were owed £1.125m in commissions due to the introduction.
However, Judge Mark Pelling QC, presiding over the case, ruled that the transaction “owed nothing” to the introduction.
Instead, it was decided that the deal was as a result of then head of global partnership sales long-standing commercial relationship with BetVictor CEO.

There is concern that the number of Wills drafted as a result of panic have potentially not been witnessed properly or executed validly due to Covid-19 restrictions in place.
The legal requirements for the execution of a valid Will are set out in Section 9 of the Wills Act 1837. It requires wills to be signed in the presence of two or more witnesses.
Lockdown and social distancing rules have meant that it is difficult to adhere to these provisions and validly execute a Will. This has led to the Government announcing that Wills can be witnessed remotely via video conferencing software e.g. Zoom, Skype etc and that this will be backdated to 31 January 2020.
However, these changes may cause further issues and a “spike” in the number of potential contentious probate cases with doubt being cast over remotely witnessed Wills on the basis of undue influence occurring behind the camera and in respect of the individuals capacity to make the Will.
The nature of the pandemic has resulted in a significant increase in the number of Wills being prepared by individuals and to the number of instructions being given to lawyers.
Many individuals have been creating a homemade Will for the sake of speed and cost-saving, however, homemade Wills risk being poorly drafted or ineffective due to failing to validly execute the Will and misspelling of names.
Due to pressure to execute Wills in a very short space of time also raises issues as to whether individuals have received informed advice, whether the issues of capacity to make a Will has been properly assessed and also as to whether the Will has been properly executed.
The remote witnessing of Wills may prove fertile ground for challenges to Wills based on undue influence, lack of knowledge and approval and lack of capacity to make the Will.
