{"id":19819,"date":"2023-12-21T13:17:21","date_gmt":"2023-12-21T13:17:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wrigleyclaydon.com\/?p=19819"},"modified":"2024-01-03T13:21:20","modified_gmt":"2024-01-03T13:21:20","slug":"actor-noel-clarke-seeks-10m-in-defamation-case-against-the-guardian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wrigleyclaydon.com\/?p=19819","title":{"rendered":"Actor Noel Clarke seeks \u00a310m in defamation case against The Guardian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/actor\">Actor<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/noel-clarke\">Noel Clarke<\/a>\u00a0has vowed to push ahead with his \u00a310 million libel claim against The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/guardian\">Guardian<\/a>\u00a0after a judge\u2019s ruling on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/newspaper\">newspaper<\/a>\u00a0articles accusing Clarke of bullying and sexual misconduct against women.<\/p>\n<p>Clarke was suspended by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/bafta\">Bafta<\/a>\u00a0in light of the allegations, his film and TV projects were axed, and he was \u201ccancelled\u201d by the entertainment industry, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/high-court\">High Court<\/a>\u00a0was told.<\/p>\n<p>He argued ordinary Guardian readers would have believed the claims against him were true, rather than disputed allegations.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian\u2019s position was that it its readers would have learned that there were \u201creasonable grounds to suspect\u201d Clarke of misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>In a preliminary ruling, Mr Justice Johnson said the first article against Clarke had conveyed the meaning that \u201cthere are strong grounds to believe that the claimant is a serial abuser of women, that he has, over 15 years, used his power to prey on and harass and sometimes bully female colleagues, that he has engaged in unwanted sexual contact, kissing, touching or groping, sexually inappropriate behaviour and comments, and professional misconduct, taking and sharing explicit pictures and videos without consent, including secretly filming a young actor\u2019s naked audition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge also ruled all of the articles could be defamatory, meaning the case can move on to the next stage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suffering a dispute can have serious implications on you and your livelihood. \u00a0Our litigation solicitors will quickly and efficiently put your case together and act on your behalf.
