    Annual pre-tax profits fall at BT as worldwide redundancies announced

    BT is to shed 4,000 jobs worldwide over the next two years and is stripping the chief executive of his annual bonus.

    The job cuts would fall on back-office and managerial sectors as it simplifies its Global Services operations.

    The move follows an accounting scandal at the Italian part of Global Services that cost BT more than £500m.

    The announcements came as BT disclosed that its annual pre-tax profits fell 19% to £2.35bn in the year to March.

    One of the biggest divorce settlements in English legal history…

    A former London oil and gas trader has been ordered to pay his estranged British wife £453 million pounds in one of the biggest divorce settlements in English legal history.

    The 61-year- old man, who has not been named, met his wife in 1989 in Moscow where she was studying and they married four years later.

    The man made his fortune in Russia’s energy sector, selling shares in a Russian company he set up for $1.37 billion in 2012.

    The woman, originally from Eastern Europe was a housewife throughout the marriage, became a British citizen in 2000.

    She argued that the wealth was “acquired and built up during their long marriage by the parties’ equal contributions to the welfare of the family”.

    The man did not contest the proceedings.

  • Chef Heston divorces estranged wife of 28 years

    Chef Heston Blumenthal’s 28 year marriage to his estranged wife Zanna Blumenthal was ended in just 90 seconds as District Judge Anne Hudd granted Zanna an undefended decree nisi at the Central Family Court six years after the couple split on the grounds that the marriage had irretrievably broken down.

    The couple have three children. They met as teenagers when he was a credit controller and he was a nurse . They married in 1989.

    It is believed that the couple, who have remained friends, wanted to sort out financial matters before getting divorced.

    Airbus profits fall amid continued problems and “contractual capabilities”

    Airbus’ profits have fallen due to continued problems with certain projects.

    Airbus stated that there were still issues over “meeting contractual capabilities” securing export orders, cost cutting, and commercial exposure.

    It also said that technical problems with engines for its new A320neo aircraft were still to be resolved.

    The warnings came as Airbus posted quarterly figures showing a 52% fall in net profits to €240m euros (£203m).

    The A400M (a multi-national, four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft) has also suffered a number of setbacks over the years, most seriously a crash during a test flight in Spain in 2015 which led to the deaths of the four crew members.

    The Airbus Helicopters unit, the world’s largest commercial helicopter maker, continues to suffer from the grounding of aircraft in UK and Norway, following a crash that killed North Sea oil workers.

    Housebuilders to set aside £m to tackle leasehold dispute

    Taylor Wimpey, one of the UK’s biggest housebuilders, has set aside £130m and apologised to home buyers in a dispute over sharply rising fees.

    It is the first major builder to apologise after criticism for leaving customers with onerous leasehold deals.

    The contracts meant that ground rents, which are paid to owners of the property, doubled every 10 years.

    MPs have described the situation as a “national scandal” and the “PPI of the house building industry”.

    Other builders have also been criticised for drawing up similar contracts, but are yet to set aside compensation.

    Contract dispute between Sports Direct and Rangers FC

    Sports Direct and Newcastle United owner billionaire Mike Ashley has won the latest round of a High Court fight with Rangers Football Club over a merchandise deal said to result in the Rangers getting about 7p of every £1 spent.

    Sports Direct group say Rangers’ directors wrongly terminated a contract through which branded products, including kits, were sold, and are seeking damages.

    Rangers’ directors dispute their claim and wanted a judge to call a halt to the litigation. They claim that Sports Direct pocketed too much money from the deal.

    Deputy High Court Judge Richard Millett has decided Ashley should be allowed to continue with the damages claim.

    He announced his decision in a written ruling after analysing competing arguments on whether litigation should stop at a High Court hearing in London.

    The judge gave no date for the next hearing.

  • Debenhams announces business strategy shake-up

    Debenhams has announced a shake-up strategy aimed at boosting its appeal by investing in its in-store cafes and improving its online offering.

    The plan includes a review of up to 10 of its 176 UK stores for possible closure over the next five years.

    A central distribution warehouse in Northampton and about 10 smaller warehouses could also close with a potential loss of 200 jobs.

    Debenhams saw half-year pre-tax profits fall by 6.4% to £87.8m.

    Its shares fell by 3.5% following the announcement.

    Pop-star Janet Jackson has split from her husband Wissam Al Mana just months after giving birth to her first child at the age of 50.

    Al Mana is the CEO of the multinational Al Mana business conglomerate and is estimated to have a fortune of around £800million.

    The couple wed in 2012 and was Janet Jackson’s third marriage.

    The singer was briefly married to singer James DeBarge in 1984 but the pair split the following year and the marriage was later annulled.

    Her second husband was back-up dancer Rene Elizondo.

    Professional negligence case finds against property agent and lawyer who failed to provide purchase deeds

    A recent judgement has been made in the professional negligence case of Adams v Atlas International Property Services Ltd which saw many individuals lose their homes which they had purchased during the Spanish property boom.

    Purchasers in England had bought property in Spain after seeing adverts placed by English agents for the developer and who received the purchase price in instalments.

    Following confirmation that the purchasers wanted to buy a property the agent arranged for Spanish lawyers to carry out the conveyancing. The property developers were unable to give clean title to the property, due to a bank charge, and subsequently became insolvent.

    Final completion monies were paid at a completion meeting and keys to the property were given to the purchasers but no signed purchase deed was provided. The bank subsequently sought possession against the purchasers who did not have good title. The purchasers therefore claimed against the agents and Spanish lawyer alleging negligence, breach of fiduciary duty and conspiracy.

    The court granted judgement against the agents for the purchase price as well as damages for distress, inconvenience and loss of amenity. As against the Spanish lawyer the court granted judgement for negligence and breach of fiduciary duty.

    Unilever sells off its margarine business as part of business review

    Unilever is to sell its margarine business, including Flora and Stork. It comes as part of a review at the Anglo-Dutch firm, which recently saw off a takeover bid from US food giant Kraft Heinz. The sell-off could fetch $6bn (£4.8bn).

    Unilever is also studying whether to change its status and looking at the wider “legal structure” of having bases in both the UK and the Netherlands because of the increased cost and complexity that comes with supporting two corporate structures, however, having dual structures can be useful defences against takeover bids.
