    Sales boost for high street retailer Next

    Sales at High Street retailer Next have had a big boost after an 11.4% increase from their Directory catalogue and internet business.

    However, full-price sales at Next Retail fell 7.4%, and it said it remained “cautious” about its outlook, given the current consumer environment.

    Next shares topped the FTSE 100 in early trading, rising more than 9.5%.

    The company also confirmed it would pay a special quarterly dividend of 45p and said its second-quarter sales were better than expected after it improved its product ranges and made its website more user-friendly.

  • Divorce settlement in a matter of days for Phoenix and Affleck

    Summer Phoenix, sister of actors Joaquin Phoenix and River Phoenix, has divorced Oscar-winning actor Casey Affleck, brother of Ben Affleck.

    The couple reached an agreement just days after Phoenix officially filed for divorce on 31st July 2017.

    The couple split in March 2016, after 10 years of marriage. They are the parents of two boys, Indiana and Atticus.

    Manchester by the Sea star Affleck faced sexual harassment allegations from women working on the set of the film in 2015. Two lawsuits connected to the allegations were settled out of court for undisclosed amounts.

    Phoenix’s divorce file cited that the pair had been separated since November 2015. Affleck confirmed the date in his response.

    Phoenix cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. Affleck will pay his ex-wife spousal support and they will share joint legal and physical custody of their children.

    Neighbour dispute over wall and felled trees

    A couple locked in a bitter dispute with their neighbours over a small wall came home to find a huge green lorry trailer parked right outside their home.

    Sophia and Gwyn Hughes said the huge container blocks out sunlight and obscures the view when they look out of their window.

    The trailer was positioned at the edge of the land owned by neighbour Mark Jones but is just inches away from the Hughes’ home in Anglesey.

    Mrs Hughes said relations with Mr Jones and his wife were fine but turned sour when they asked if they could rebuild a small wall on the edge of their land.

    Mr Jones claimed the Hughes’ view of the trailer would have been reduced had they not taken down trees that belonged to his family.

    Mrs Hughes categorically denied the felled trees belonged to the Joneses.

    After consulting with their solicitor, they decided to sign over the wall. Mrs Hughes said she had been told the Joneses would consider removing the lorry trailer if she would reimburse them the cost of their legal fees and offer an apology.

    High net worth divorce for Samsung heiress

    A Seoul court ordered Samsung Group heiress Lee Boo-jin to provide assets of 8.6 billion won ($7.64 million) to her estranged husband, Im Woo-jae in their divorce.

    Lee did receive sole custody of their son in the ruling.

    Im Woo-jae was dubbed “Mr. Cinderella” by media for his humble background before marrying Lee in 1999.

    The couple, who met at a volunteering event, had to overcome opposition from both families in order to marry.

    Im who was seeking 1.2 trillion won ($1.1 billion) from Lee.

    Forbes estimates Lee’s net worth at $2 billion.

    Divorce law changes for those in a short marriage

    Couples who divorce after only a brief marriage can no longer expect to have their assets split equally by default following an appeal court ruling.

    Energy trader Julie Sharp successfully challenged a ruling that her former husband was entitled to half of the fortune she built up during their four year marriage.

    She argued that “because this was a short marriage he should not get half of the matrimonial pot”.

    The Court of Appeal ruled in her favour, concluding that the £2.725 million payout previously awarded to Robin Sharp, an IT consultant, should be reduced to  £2 million.

    Lord Justice McFarlane, one of three judges sitting on the Court of Appeal panel, said there was “no impediment” to depart from that principle [of equal division] concluding that in a short, dual career marriage in which the couple had kept their finances separate, it was indeed “justified”.

  • Profit slum for Sports Direct – our commercial solicitors look into why…

    Profits at Sports Direct have plummeted nearly 60%, which the firm said was largely due to the weaker pound.

    Pre-tax profit fell to £113.7m from £275.2m in 2016 because of “currency movements and increased depreciation charges”.

    Chief executive and the owner of Newcastle Football Club, Mike Ashley, said it had now taken steps to “minimise the short-term impact of currency volatility”.

    Sports Direct’s reputation has been badly affected by revelations about staff conditions at its warehouse in Derbyshire.

    Sports Direct has recently bought a stake in Game Digital, increased its stake in Debenhams, and acquired lingerie firm Agent Provocateur which may have affected its profits.

  • What does the Trade Union Act 2016 mean for employers?

    Several months since the Trade Union Act 2016 has come into force, Wrigley Claydon looks into some of the key changes. We have highlighted some of the key aspects of the Act, which are as follows:

    1. Before companies and industrial action can take place, 50% of members need to vote
    2. Trade Unions will need to give two week’s notice before they start a strike
    3. For public sector employees, there is a restriction on deduction of Union subscriptions direct from their salary. What this means in principle, is that Union subscriptions will no longer be removed automatically from wages – employees will physically need to arrange payment of their subscriptions.
    4. The Act restricts Union’s abilities to contribute to political causes.

    What does the Trade Union Act 2016 mean for your business?

    In many industries there is no Union representation for employees. As an employer, if your employees are not part of a Union, there is nothing forcing you to make them join one. If none of your employees are part of a Union, then this Act does not directly affect you. If you employ some staff that are Union members or all of your staff are part of a Union, then this legislation strengthens an employer’s position. It makes it more difficult for Unions to strike.

  • Lloyds to repay arrears fees and PPI claims to the tune of £1bn

    Lloyds Banking Group has set aside another £1bn to cover the cost of insurance mis-selling and the treatment of mortgage customers.

    Another £700m will cover payment protection insurance (PPI) claims and £283m will be used to repay about 590,000 mortgage holders.

    The repayment to mortgage customers comes after they were charged from 2009 to 2016 for going into arrears.

    The Financial Conduct Authority had been investigating the issue, concluding that the charges should not have been applied as the bank did not always do enough to understand customers’ circumstances and check that their arrears payment plans were affordable and sustainable.

    Lloyds will refund all fees charged for arrears management and broken payment arrangements, and it will also pay any litigation fees that were applied unfairly to customers who were involved in related legal action.

    In addition, it will also offer payments for potential distress and inconvenience.

  • Jones awarded $9.4m from Jackson estate in financial dispute case

    A Los Angeles Superior Court jury ruled that Michael Jackson’s estate owes producer Quincy Jones $9.4 million in royalties and production fees from Billie Jean, Thriller and more of the star’s biggest hits.

    The award was short of the $30 million the producer sought in the lawsuit filed nearly four years ago, but well above the approximately $392,000 the Jackson estate contended Jones was owed.

    Jones claimed in the lawsuit that Jackson’s estate and Sony Music Entertainment owed him for music he had produced that was used in the concert film This Is It and two Cirque du Soleil shows that used Jackson’s songs.

    Michael Jackson’s estate attorney Howard Weitzman said he and his team were surprised by the verdict and would appeal it.

    Lego in copyright infringement dispute with UK removal firm

    Lego have threatened to sue a removals firm over the figures painted on the side of their vans.

    It claims Kwik Stix are infringing their copyright with the design and have ordered it to be removed within 28 days.

    Lego is demanding Kwik Stix removes anything on the internet that displays the logo, and which means the owner of Kwik Stix will also have to get new uniforms and remove it from his vans.
