World’s Biggest Coffee Morning – 28th September 2018

The network was set up in 2008 when charities were looking for a way to encourage supporters to write their Wills and consider including a legacy.

How Wrigley Claydon played a part in the World’s First baby to be conceived via IVF
Louise Brown, the World’s First Baby conceived via IVF was born on the 25th July 1978, at Oldham General Hospital.
On 10th November 1977, Louise’s Mother, Lesley Brown underwent a procedure, later to become known as in vitro fertilisation (IVF), developed by Patrick Steptoe, Robert Edwards and Jean Purdy.
Patrick Steptoe was a client of Wrigley Claydon Solicitors, and at the time Paul Vincent, who was a junior parnter, was asked to draw up legal papers for a research trust to be set up by Steptoe and Professor Bob Edwards concerning the whole IVF issue which the pair were pioneering.
Robert Edwards, whose research enabled IVF won a Nobel prize. Although the media referred to Louise Brown as a “test tube baby”, her conception actually took place in a petri dish.

Former Arsenal shareholder Lady Bracewell-Smith sues Linklaters
A former shareholder at Arsenal Football Club, Lady Bracewell-Smith has issued a claim in the Commercial Court for professional negligence against her former solicitors Linklaters. She alleges that her solicitors gave negligent advice on loan notes she received as payment for her shares causing her to face a substantial tax bill. She claims that the firm failed to advise her properly on the tax she would incur as a UK citizen selling bonds situated outside of the UK.
The claim also states that but for the mistakes of Linklaters she would not have sold her Arsenal shares to Kroenke Sports Enterprises, the company controlled by US businessman Stan Kroenke who is now the club’s majority shareholder but rather would have sold them to Alisher Usmanov in 2011 or another shareholder, resulting in different leadership of the club.
The claim has evidently not been resolved through mediation or other forms of dispute resolution.

Asos sees strong sales over Christmas
Online fashion retailer Asos saw strong sales over the Christmas period as total sales rose by 30% to £790m in the final four months of 2017.
Online Manchester-based rival, Boohoo, which also owns PrettyLittleThings and Nasty Gal brands, saw revenues double to £228m in the four months to the end of December.
The performance of online retailers is putting pressure on the likes of Next and Marks and Spencer.
