The news comes after Karen Clifton was spotted with her rumoured boyfriend in London.

A transgender woman, referred to as J, who left a tight-knit ultra-Orthodox Jewish community to embark on a new life as a woman has taken her case to be allowed access to her five children to the Court of Appeal.

She was challenging a ruling that the children risked greater psychological harm by being ostracised by the Haredi community if they saw her than if direct contact ceased.

Earlier this year, J told Mr Justice Peter Jackson in the Manchester family court, that she wanted to be “sensitively reintroduced” to her children, whom she had not seen for about 18 months.

The children’s other parent, referred to as B, told the court that direct contact would result in the children being shunned and excluded from family events and community festivities.

With “real regret”, Mr Justice Peter Jackson said that the children should not see J but should be allowed to exchange letters and cards.

Three appeal judges Sir James Munby, Lady Justice Arden and Lord Justice Singh – considered J’s case on Wednesday and are expected to rule in the near future.

In a recent case where a father sought contact with his daughter, he wanted to rely on his various covert recordings of conversations that he had had with a social worker, a Cafcass officer and a solicitor.

The President of the Family Division, Sir James Munby, sitting in the Court of Appeal with King LJ, said that the recordings were relevant and admissible and it was a matter for the trial judge to decide what weight they should carry. He further added that “anyone seeking to rely on such material must…apply to the court for permission.’

Ministry of Justice figures highlighting the rising number of private law cases and litigants in person have prompted calls for the government to heed recent warnings about the family justice system.

13,029 new private law applications, involving over 28,000 children, were made between April and June this year, a 3% increase on the same period last year. Neither the applicant nor respondent were represented in 36% of disposals, compared with 34% in the previous quarter.

This month the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Thomas told the House of Commons that the rise in private law cases was “deeply worrying”. Suggested solutions included reverting to the old legal aid system or, as is done in California, provide a lawyer in court who can advise on an employed basis.

Figures show 27,291 divorce petitions were made between April and June, down 10% on the same quarter last year. Resolution said the decline reflected the growing number of cohabiting couples, the fastest growing family type in the UK. “Yet, bizarrely, there is still little or no legal protection for cohabitants should they separate. This needs to change.” Nigel Shepherd, Resolution Chair, said.

According to new research from the Co-op, a quarter of divorcees in the UK have considered reconciliation with their ex and 12 per cent actually got back together. Of these, 73 per cent cited managing to forgive an infidelity as the main reason, while 40 per cent simply admitted still loving their ex. This has been called a “boomerang divorce” or “yo-yo couples” – divorcees who get back together with their ex-spouse.

One example is the former footballer Jimmy Greaves who, last week, remarried his ex-wife Irene, 59 years after their first wedding and 40 years after their divorce in 1977.
